When it comes to “prefab” dwellings, I’m all about them! Today, we are seeing more and more homes built prefabricated and even more with sustainable, green design as the overall concept.

The miniHome, designed by Altius Architecture Inc. and Sustain Design Studio, is by far one of the coolest concepts of “off-the-grid” living I’ve seen. The home is technically an RV, however there are different kinds of RV’s. The miniHome is classified as a “travel trailer”, (not designed for recreational travel), which means it’s built on a durable steel frame with three axles, on wheels. It’s designed to function as a comfortable, year round residence, but it’s also suitable as a cottage, vacation retreat, guest cabin, or work space. The decision is yours.
The miniHome is tiny, but with a long view from one end of the home to the other. Space saving features such as fold up beds, tables and overhead cabinets, high ceilings, (up to 13′), and tons of windows that engulf the space with light, make it appear very spacious.
“Off-the-grid” living typically means not connected to any form of municipal infrastructure (electrical and gas servicing). All the energy required for the miniHome is produced by solar panels but it does require a water supply and wastewater treatment system.

The home is designed with 100% green materials. There’s no vinyl, formaldehyde or toxic adhesive used in production, but rather water and plant based finishes, and all the wood is certified FSC, just to name a few of the sustainable living concepts used in creating the miniHome.
Currently there are two styles available- the SOLO and new DUO. A unit available for viewing is located in Toronto, Canada. The company will credit you up to $500 towards your purchase price to help cover your travel costs to visit the miniHome. They ship anywhere in the continental US and Canada and offer financing packages. Now that’s some cool stuff!

I’m quickly falling in love with tiny prefabs and this one does look really cool.
The only problem is, I can’t find any links to it here.

Amy,
You can click on the term “miniHome” in the article and that will link you to the site. You can also go to the main URL address which is sustain.ca
Hope this is helpful!
