If you read my blog yesterday, you know that I added a great music video as a reminder on how important it is to be conscious of plastic waste and our responsibility toward it. We consume more than 50 billion plastic bags worldwide, per year, (1 million per minute). Those 500 billion bags are equal to 60 million barrels of oil. The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only 4 trips to the grocery store. That’s amazing when you actually think about it.
There’s one simple action we can all take that will have a major impact on the health of our planet and its inhabitants. The next time you shop, don’t leave the store carrying a plastic bag. If everyone did this, one of the most destructive polluters created by man would be removed from circulation.
There are tons of reusable bag options available in stores and online that help eliminate our need for plastic. I’ve been collecting my fair share for years now and have a creative selection available. I know there are times when you’re running out of the house, heading to the store and as soon as you step foot inside, you remember you’ve forgotten your cloth bags. They’re home hanging on the doorknob. It’s cool. I’ve been there.
I’ve come across the best-recycled bags out there. Ones that are so compact and so easy to toss in a backpack, purse, laptop bag, or pants pocket that you’ll never be without one when shopping again. Plus they’re made from sustainable, materials and in accordance with fair labor, fair trade practices.
Reuseblebags recently sent me a sample of their Recycled PET Workhorse bags. On first look I was like, “how am I ever going to get this bag out of its tiny little pouch and then back in when I’m finished”? But, it was the easiest transition ever! The pouch is only 2″ x 3″ x 2″-small enough so you can toss a few in a purse or bag easily and never, ever have to use plastic bags again. The bag opens into a heavy-duty, water and mildew resistant 19″x 16″ x 6″ sack which can hold up to 25 lbs.
I took one with me this past weekend on a weekend get-a-way and loaded it up with some of my yoga stuff. I was able to fit my yoga mat and running sneakers with room to spare. The good-sized handles make it easy to carry and the bag seems self-supporting; it’s shaped so that the contents don’t easily fall out of the bag once the bag is set down.
The bags come in 6 great, gender-neutral colors- perfect for girls and guys. If you buy 4 or more, they’re $8.95 each. They also offer discounts for larger purchases. I think they make really awesome gifts for friends, or colleagues. Give one to a hostess instead of a bottle of wine. I’m thinking I’ll use some to wrap presents. Keep one in your messenger bag for those after-work or last minute errands. If everyone remembered to bring just one of these bags with them, think of the plastic bags we could help eliminate yearly.
Reusablebags works with trusted mills to develop their recycled PET. They’ve definitely done their research to insure that the material is genuinely made from recycled bottles and containers. They also donate 1% of their sales (not just profits) to 1% for the Planet and work to empower local groups and communities by providing product donations and discounts for non-profits, educational events, environmental fairs and more.
These are hands-down the best-recycled bags out there. I dig them and am happy to be able to write this review in hopes that others purchase some of these bags and we spread the word on cutting down waste and minimizing damage to the environment. Reusablebags also has many other great products like the Recycled Pet Snack Bag. Make sure you stop by and check them out.
