Whether you’re a wine drinker who prefers red over white, Pinot over Merlot, now you have the option of choosing to “go green” with the ECO Series™ bottles.
It is fairly well known that a wine bottle’s weight, size and shape have a large impact on its carbon footprint. In addition, the resources required in producing the bottle, its ability to be recycled, and the materials that constitute the bottle are all important environmental considerations. As a result, the traditional glass bottle is at a real disadvantage. Glass is heavy and is more resource-intensive to produce and to recycle than either plastic bottles or cans. However, glass currently is, and will likely remain, the preferred vessel for wine by the majority of consumers. So how can a wine bottle’s environmental impact be reduced?
Enter the Eco Series ™ wine bottle by Saint-Gobain Containers. These inventive glass wine bottles were introduced in an attempt to balance consumer preference and sustainability. The Eco Series™ wine bottles are produced from recycled glass, called cullet. By using cullet, Saint-Gobain is able to drastically reduce the use of raw materials, (currently by about 15%), and energy usage. In fact, recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a computer for 30 minutes!
Saint-Gobain has set an aggressive goal to increase their use of recycled glass to 50% by 2013. They have even created two cartoon characters to teach consumers about glass and glass recycling: Captain Cullet and Little Gob o’ Glass.
The Eco Series ™ includes a range of shapes and sizes within three design options, all designed to use fewer raw materials and to weigh less than average glass wine bottles:
Revolution: A 10.55oz bottle– the lightest 750ml glass wine bottle in the world, according to Saint-Gobain.
Evolution: A 14 oz bottle–has key characteristics of typical wine bottles- punt, shoulders, average height and shape (Claret and Burgundy).
Inspiration: A 16.5 oz bottle–ideal for high-end wines, with large punt and above-average height.
So, if you don’t want to drink wine from aluminum or plastic, reach for an Eco Series ™ glass bottle, and help save the planet one organic glass of wine at a time!

Hi Kristen, if more leading manufacturers in their own sphere of operation set trends such as these, the world would be a much better place to live in. It’s really good that Saint Gobain is taking the time, effort and money to go green and also educate the public about its benefits. http://climatarians.org hopes more market leaders follow the lead and take this more seriously.
Great post!
