The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

This World Water Day (Sunday), the focus will be on transboundary waters; the waters that cross borders and keep us together. More information is available on the official UN World Water Day website.

With two thirds of the earth’s surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75% of it, it’s evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth.

We thought today would be a good day to do a 27oz, orange Klean Kanteen giveaway, (generously donated by Buy Green). In addition to including environmental and fair labor consciousness in their business practices, Klean Kanteen partners with local, national, and international organizations to support efforts toward health, clean drinking water, and protecting the environment.

“Here’s What You Do To Win”

Tell us one tip (in our comment section) you use for conserving water and how you feel you can participate this World Water Day, in being more eco-conscious regarding natures most invaluable resource.

We will choose the winner this Sunday, World Water Day – Good Luck!

First comment? How about the old brick in the toilet tank idea as a starter.

Water should be conserved where it’s needed. Most of the people dying from thirst don’t have access to water simply because they don’t have the technology. All those money on water-saving advertisements should be spent giving some water pumps to people in Africa. I don’t see how if I put a brick in my toilet tank I’m gonna save a guy in Etiopia.

I think one of the best things to think about when saving water is making little changes over time. For North Americans the primary use for personal water is hygiene. To make a change like taking “navy showers” (turning the water off while soaping up) may seem annoying, but that is the kind of change which starts the ball rolling on awareness. Once you’ve made your morning shower quicker and perhaps slightly less comfortable, I think you’re more likely to start watching out for other ways you can reduce the amount of water wasted in your home.

bucket in the shower is a perfect alternative toilet flush!

I’ve started washing my dishes by hand and only doing totally full loads of laundry. I also tend to try and wash my car in the rain. I bought a low-water usage shower head as well. As for showers…. me and my fiance tend to take shorter showers together. A bit personal but our water consumption has dropped considerably.

Install a rain barrel to catch rainwater. Use it for watering indoor plants or outdoor plants on dry days. You won’t have to give up anything for this tip!

Water saving tip: install low flow shower heads. This way either you save about half the normal amount of water and even less if you use the navy shower method. I think the best way to get involved in World Water Day is just to be conscious of water and how much you use. Become informed and look into issues surrounding water, its use, and the impacts around the world.

One of the simplest tips, which I learned along time ago, is to water your (indoor) plants with the water you boiled vegetables in. Not only does this conserve water—you get 2 uses out of the same pot of water—it also helps to fertilize your plants, as some of the nutrients from the vegetables will “leak” into the water when you boil them.

I should probably note, just in case anyone doesn’t realize it, that you should let the vegetable water cool down before watering your plants. You don’t want to boil your potted plants! LOL

At my college in my dorm we have shower competitions. We time how long it takes us too shower, and at the end of the semester the one with the shortest time wins. The record right now is 2:14.
