A new gym in Portland, Oregon called the Green Microgym is where to go to burn a few calories plus, it’s also the only gym in the world running on some of its own power!

Gyms are some of the biggest energy suckers with all those treadmills, bikes, elliptical machines, and flat-screen TVs they contain.

Not the Green Microgym. They use humans to actually power the equipment through their exercise. What a genius idea!

Movement on the gym’s stationary bikes contributes power to batteries, which generates electricity for the TV and stereo. The energy output is relatively small, but Adam Boesel, (the gym’s owner), has visions of bigger, greener ideas. “Our goal is to someday create 100 percent of the electricity we use in the gym,” he told ABC News. “The short-term goal is to get all of the electricity we can out of the machines.”

The gym’s features include SportsArt EcoPowr treadmills which use 30% less electricity than others, solar panels that generate an average of 8 kilowatt hours per day and a 4-person machine with hand cranks and foot pedals which can generate up to 100 watts of electricity an hour.

The Green Microgym also reduces their carbon footprint by using EnergyStar rated items, eco cork flooring, double flush toilets, non toxic soaps and a whole host of other ingredients that make for the greenest gym to date!

What a great way to help the environment, burn calories and release stress. A one stop for mind, body and green living! I’m a gym junkie, have been for years and of course I’m all about green living. My only issue with the Green Microgym is that I wish I’d thought of it. Way to go Adam! We look forward to seeing all the other “green” elements you add to your gym.
