When you think of cork, what’s one of the first things that come to mind- wine, or a bulletin board, right?
Cork flooring is becoming increasingly popular and its many benefits may amaze you.
Cork comes from the bark of the tree only. The bark is harvested every nine years, and then grows back with no harm to the tree itself. Some cork trees can live up to 800 years!
Cork flooring is made by crushing the bark into small pieces. Next, a non-toxic resin is applied to act as an adhesive. Manufacturers are able to attain an amazing array of patterns, colors and textures.
Aside from looking great, cork has an impressive list of features and benefits that most people aren’t aware of. One of the greatest benefits of cork flooring is its environmental impact. Cork doesn’t produce any irritants, nor does it contain harmful chemicals. It’s all natural.
Cork’s resilience or ability to “bounce back” is second to none. When the floor is subject to pressure, (like a shoe heel) the cells are compressed. When pressure is released, the cork bounces back to its original shape. Half of the corks volume is air, which acts as a natural shock and sound absorber. The air pockets also make cork a great insulator.
Cork also contains a fatty substance called Suberin in the wall of its tissues that makes it waterproof and resistant to decay from gases and liquids, making it the seal of choice for wine bottles for more than a hundred years.
Most common insects including termites won’t even go near cork because of its natural composition. Microbe colonies can’t survive either, therefore it’s germ resistant!
Depending on the style of the cork, it can cost half the price of other floors. Considering its many benefits and eco-friendly nature, cork is an excellent choice of flooring!
