It’s now possible to transition from a workout at the gym to lunch with friends or even back to the office without a major wardrobe change. Boston-based IVEE is a fashion forward sportswear company dedicated to creating luxuriously comfortable sportswear embodying simple glamour and natural elegance. Their designs are for the busy yet style-conscious woman who wants to move effortlessly from the yoga, pilates, or the gym to coffee with effortless yet hip style.

Zoe Jacket

IVEE’s sporty collection, includes their green, eco-friendly bamboo. Bamboo fabric offers the softness of silk, while being durable and breathable at the same time. The soft fabric is naturally hypoallergenic, and anti-bacterial, naturally preventing odors, allergies and skin irritations. The fabric is also uniquely thermal regulating, providing warmth in cooler weather, but allowing a cooling effect in hot weather while wicking away moisture.

But while much bamboo clothing may be eco-friendly, it’s not automatically stylish. Fortunately, IVEE clothing has created comfy, eco-hip bamboo threads. The price tags might make it hard to build an entire IVEE wardrobe, but purchase one piece and you’ll be hooked.

Each year cotton producers around the world use close to $2.6 billion worth of pesticides and insecticides, which accounts for more than 35% of the world’s annual pesticide and insecticide use. In California’s San Joaquin valley alone, more than 18 million pounds of pesticides are sprayed annually onto 1 million acres of cotton. It takes approximately 1/3 of a pound of pesticides, herbicides, and defoliants to grow enough cotton to make just one conventional cotton T-shirt.

Of the nine chemicals used in growing cotton, five of them are known carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals). Every one of them is classified category I or II by the EPA. Categories I and II are considered the most dangerous chemicals.

But since just being green isn’t enough for us, why not wear t-shirts that feature edgy themes?! These cool t-shirts are made by Joe and Mike Maluso, a father and son team who are inspired by their love for America and their responsibility to keep it clean. Thought provoking graphics paired with organic cotton and water based print methods make these tees a great addition to any feel-good fashion wardrobe. Definitely worth a look.

I’m sure you’ve heard about hemp clothing and where the fabric comes from. Hemp clothing and the fabric made from hemp is derived from the cannabis sativa plant. This material has been used to make everything from ropes to canvas. And it makes some pretty amazing clothing as well. Easily dyed and easily blended with other fibers, hemp is used to make everything from durable brown work pants to a lavender silky-looking blouse.

Hemp is actually three times stronger than cotton. At the same time it is lightweight and absorbent. Add to all of that the fact that hemp produces more fiber per acre than trees and that it’s a renewable resource. Because just about every type and style of clothing can be produced from hemp fibers and because it is an environmentally sound fiber to grow and produce, hemp is perhaps the single best fiber option available on the planet. It’s economical, versatile and durable and it’s grown in a manner that doesn’t harm the environment. What can be better than that? We love this John Varvatos Crew Hemp Sweater. It’s the perfect blend of greeness and eco hipness.

The genesis of hessnatur is both simple and unique. The time was 1976, before people who loved and respected nature were called environmentalists, before there was a green movement. Heinz Hess was a naturalist, a man who ardently believed that pure was better, organic was healthier, that man and nature should exist in harmony.
Organic Cotton Henley
The demand for healthy clothing alternatives led Hess to initiate organic cotton farming projects, the world’s first in Sekem, Egypt, followed by projects in Peru, Senegal, Turkey and Burkina Faso. The fibers for his company hessnatur, are grown and cultivated without artificial fertilizers and pesticides, anything, in fact, that harms the people who wear the cotton or the people who grow it. Beyond cotton, Hess began to work with partners who developed organic linen, silk and wool, adhering to the same strict measures as the cotton.
Organic Pima Cotton Henley
In 2002, hessnatur set the standard for humane labor conditions in the clothing industry, with the Clean Clothes Campaign. hessnatur offers beautiful, natural, organic clothing for everyone in the family, from a company with a conscience.

Eco Hip Cardigans for Eco Threads Thursday

by Kristen Banker on October 8, 2009 in Eco Threads Thursday

Eco-fashion is about making clothes and accessories that take into account the environment, the health of consumers and the working conditions of people in the fashion industry. Adopting eco-friendly clothes won’t force you to compromise on your fashion sense. It’s easy to make a fashion statement with eco clothing! Eco apparel is generally made of recycled and environment friendly materials such as hemp, organic cotton, bamboo, corn, poplin and tencel instead of polyester, synthetic materials and rayon. Here are a couple of my fav eco-hip fall sweater picks.

Lightweight and tightly woven, this soft cardigan has a slimmer fit and tonal buttons for a throw-on-over-anything appeal.  The B. Son Organic Jersey Cardigan is on sale at Tobi for $61.00.

Soo soft! This slouchy grandpa cardigan doesn’t add bulk to your hips like thicker styles do, and the neutral charcoal grey goes with everything.  This Alternative Apparel Mr. Rogers Eco Cardigan is also available at Tobi for $50.00.

More than 85% of the world’s clothing is made from cotton. In the U.S. alone, we use approximately 600 thousand tons of pesticides and chemical fertilizers on cotton fields each season. In fact, 25% of all chemical pesticides used worldwide are used on cotton crops. Did you know it
takes about 1 pound of chemical pesticides to grow enough cotton for just one t-shirt?

Aldicarb, which is the pesticide used most frequently on cotton crops, is also the most acutely toxic pesticide according to the EPA. Just one drop absorbed through the skin is enough to kill a person. Almost 2 million pounds of Aldicarb is applied to crops in the U.S. every year.

Raw Earth & Wild Sky is a sustainable style company founded by Karen Kananen and Samantha Robinson. Their love for fashion, concern for the planet, and the birth of their daughters were the driving force behind starting an eco conscious company. The line focuses on beautifully relaxed pieces with a well crafted broken in look.

I happen to think this biker style jacket is super cool. It offers plenty of attitude with some understated softer details like puffed sleeves and comfy fleece material. BTC Elements has this piece on sale at the moment. Originally $236.00, now on sale for $118.00. You can purchase HERE.
