Eco-Friendly Swimwear Just in Time for Summer

by Kristen Banker on May 11, 2010 in Eco Internet

While we have little control over the oil spills, consumers can make the choice to make their clothing as eco-friendly as possible.   The very suits that are worn to enjoy the sun and the sand are often made from non-biodegradable materials that use a great deal of petroleum to make and also emit harmful gases into the environment as they’re produced.   A new awareness of the environment brings about a new look at swimwear while doing as little damage to it as possible. Head on over to Green Earth News and view swimwear designers who have designed eco-friendly suits!.

The Green Music Group formed back in January, a child of Reverb, the Maine nonprofit that greens concert venues. The group has just launched an 18-week challenge that aims to get people active in community greening projects. It also gives you a chance to win some great prizes. To play, you need to take the action, so head on over to Treehugger and get all the details!

Huffington Post Lists 9 of World’s Best Subways

by Kristen Banker on April 12, 2010 in Eco Internet

When you’re traveling around the world, it’s good to know that there are public transit systems available to help you get where you want to go. Underground subway systems offer the convenience of getting where you want, when you want, without the hassle of having to flag down a taxi or rent a car. The underground system’s are also known around the world as the metro, underground, and tube. They are distinguished by being separated from all other types of traffic, pedestrians included. When it comes to energy consumption and space occupancy, metros are among the most efficient means of transportation. And in just about all cases, it’s the most cost effective option too.

There are some beautiful, modern, and vast transit systems throughout the world. The Huffington Post has just listed 9 of the most popular and diverse international underground transit systems. They are but a mere sample of the eye-catching transit systems that exist throughout the world. I’m happy to see my two cities made it on the list (NYC, Montreal)! Make sure you head on over (HERE) to vote for your favorite and check out the awesome images.

Keetsa Mattress is quickly becoming one of the bedding industries most intriguing and successful stories. Challenging the way the mattress industry conducts business; Keetsa addresses several issues such as sustainability, recyclability and the overall health aspect of mattresses by providing a low cost alternative.

Keetsa NYC Store

Keetsa NYC Store

Keetsa’s’ New York store is built in an eco-friendly way in that 90% of the materials used is either recycled, reclaimed or restructured to minimize the waste attributed to opening new locations.

Through innovation in foam manufacturing, Keetsa utilizes materials such as natural, recycled and sustainable ingredients to give consumers a more eco-friendly and healthy alternative to traditional foam.

Because of Keetsa’s packaging innovations, a new Keetsa mattress ships in less than a third of the space that a traditional mattress consumes. This decreases the carbon foot print dependency on traditional petroleum based transportation methods and eliminates the need for special delivery trucks. This helps account for Keetsa’s lower retail price, which is anywhere from half to a third of traditional mattresses, making it easy for people from all walks of life to sleep in comfort.

Keetsa has its headquarters in San Francisco and has just opened a new store located at 69 Mercer St (between Spring and Broome), in New York City. As a special offer to Modern Eco Homes readers, Keetsa is offering you the opportunity to receive two FREE Biofoam Pillows, ($140 dollar value). All you have to do is simply call or visit their store in Soho and purchase any one of their mattresses and you’ll receive two pillows at no additional cost. Make sure you mention Modern Eco Homes when purchasing your goods. We love these guys! And while you’re checking them out, make sure you visit their blog. They always have great information and topics. Let me know what you think! Sleep well.

Solar panels perch on the roof of the historic building where the Toronto, CA. worldSALON is housed generates solar thermal energy to heat the water, helping displace around 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Compact fluorescents have replaced the 500-watt halogen bulbs that were once used to illuminate the interior, and the computers operate on power bars so no electricity is drawn when the switch is flipped off at night.

These are among several eco-friendly initiatives spearheaded by worldSALON owner Brian Phillips, who is among an emerging group in the salon and spa industry working to offer eco-friendly products while integrating sustainable solutions into their businesses.

His efforts are paying off. In 2007, Phillips received a certificate from the Ontario Power Authority for reducing the salon’s energy consumption by more than 50% over a seven-year span. Phillips is a nominee for the first annual Green Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship being presented this weekend in Toronto at the Mirror Awards, honoring Canadian hairdressers, stylists, salons and spas.

Also available are worldPRODUCTS, developed by Phillips. They are a plant-based skin and hair-care line free of artificial colors, fragrances and parabens, chemicals that are used as preservatives in cosmetics and toiletries.

It’s a pretty great movement of people who care about the environment. The bigger this movement becomes, the more attractive it becomes, and more people will want to be part of it.
