Keetsa Mattress is quickly becoming one of the bedding industries most intriguing and successful stories. Challenging the way the mattress industry conducts business; Keetsa addresses several issues such as sustainability, recyclability and the overall health aspect of mattresses by providing a low cost alternative.

Keetsa NYC Store

Keetsa NYC Store

Keetsa’s’ New York store is built in an eco-friendly way in that 90% of the materials used is either recycled, reclaimed or restructured to minimize the waste attributed to opening new locations.

Through innovation in foam manufacturing, Keetsa utilizes materials such as natural, recycled and sustainable ingredients to give consumers a more eco-friendly and healthy alternative to traditional foam.

Because of Keetsa’s packaging innovations, a new Keetsa mattress ships in less than a third of the space that a traditional mattress consumes. This decreases the carbon foot print dependency on traditional petroleum based transportation methods and eliminates the need for special delivery trucks. This helps account for Keetsa’s lower retail price, which is anywhere from half to a third of traditional mattresses, making it easy for people from all walks of life to sleep in comfort.

Keetsa has its headquarters in San Francisco and has just opened a new store located at 69 Mercer St (between Spring and Broome), in New York City. As a special offer to Modern Eco Homes readers, Keetsa is offering you the opportunity to receive two FREE Biofoam Pillows, ($140 dollar value). All you have to do is simply call or visit their store in Soho and purchase any one of their mattresses and you’ll receive two pillows at no additional cost. Make sure you mention Modern Eco Homes when purchasing your goods. We love these guys! And while you’re checking them out, make sure you visit their blog. They always have great information and topics. Let me know what you think! Sleep well.

Solar panels perch on the roof of the historic building where the Toronto, CA. worldSALON is housed generates solar thermal energy to heat the water, helping displace around 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Compact fluorescents have replaced the 500-watt halogen bulbs that were once used to illuminate the interior, and the computers operate on power bars so no electricity is drawn when the switch is flipped off at night.

These are among several eco-friendly initiatives spearheaded by worldSALON owner Brian Phillips, who is among an emerging group in the salon and spa industry working to offer eco-friendly products while integrating sustainable solutions into their businesses.

His efforts are paying off. In 2007, Phillips received a certificate from the Ontario Power Authority for reducing the salon’s energy consumption by more than 50% over a seven-year span. Phillips is a nominee for the first annual Green Circle Award for Environmental Stewardship being presented this weekend in Toronto at the Mirror Awards, honoring Canadian hairdressers, stylists, salons and spas.

Also available are worldPRODUCTS, developed by Phillips. They are a plant-based skin and hair-care line free of artificial colors, fragrances and parabens, chemicals that are used as preservatives in cosmetics and toiletries.

It’s a pretty great movement of people who care about the environment. The bigger this movement becomes, the more attractive it becomes, and more people will want to be part of it.

Eco-Friendly Green Movement in Music Industry

by Kristen Banker on February 12, 2010 in Eco Internet

There are tons and tons of bands in vans and buses driving hundreds of miles every day to play gigs in hopes of making it in the music industry. The sad thing is there are few of them who really think about their impact on the environment. The good news is that there is a growing green movement in the music industry from rocker’s that we love. This is an inspiration to all since children and young adults look up to these guys and girls as role models.

The New Sustainable Youth Anti-Agent Program

by Kristen Banker on February 3, 2010 in Eco Internet

As most of you know, I’m a self-professed organic face cream junkie. A few months ago I was asked to write a review for Sustainable Youth’s Immune Performance Elasticity Cream. I’m happy to report that I’m still a proud user of this wonderful product. You can purchase the elasticity cream at Sustainable Youth for $65.00. That’s roughly less then a $1.50 a day, but during these financially difficult times, $65.00 for facial cream can seem a bit pricey.

Sustainable Youth

Sustainable Youth recently launched an Anti-Agent Program. It works like this: For every dollar spent by one of your referrals, you will receive one “GreenRewards” that can be redeemed for cash or a Members Only product discount that can be used towards a future purchase of your own Sustainable Youth products – helping you to sustain your youth without breaking the bank.

Do you have what it takes to be a Sustainable Youth Anti-Agent? Find out  by answering a few simple questions on the Sustainable Youth site and you could be on your way to earning Sustainable Youth GreenRewards. It’s as simple as spreading the good news about Sustainable Youth, and helping your friends, family, and associates feel and look younger, naturally.

The company holds itself to the highest standards of ethics and sustainability as part of its core philosophy to restore the beauty of our environment – one person at a time.

This cool program can help you supplement your income, or help you save your hard-earned money by using your “Members Only” discount on Sustainable Youth products.

Head on over to determine if you are a Sustainable Youth Anti-Agent! Let me know how it goes.

Five Great Green Websites to Bookmark!

by Katie Nielsen on January 13, 2010 in Eco Internet

My personal attempt at living a more eco-friendly lifestyle would be far more ineffective and (let’s be honest) pathetic without access to resources that have made my green progression so much easier and more fulfilling. While everyone has their preferred methods of green living, I thought I’d share some of my favorite green websites that I routinely use:

ElectronicsRecycling.net

The National Center for Electronics Recycling is a non-profit organization created in 2005 in order to develop a national infrastructure for the recycling of used electronics. Old electronics are often one of the most harmful items discarded in landfills, emitting toxic chemicals and lead considered hazardous. The NCER highly encourages reuse of old electronics and also offers information on several non-profits and other reuse programs that have needs for the equipment.

ClothingSwaps.com

If you keep abreast of national headlines, it’s likely you’ve heard about H&M’s (an upcoming and fashion retailer) destroy-and-discard policy. Recently, a several bags of unworn but mutilated clothing were found outside one of the retailer’s Manhattan locations. The unsold clothing was destroyed allegedly in an effort to keep it from being worn or sold by a third-party. I found such blatant disregard to not only be extremely wasteful but a missed opportunity in a time of economic turmoil and great need. Shouldn’t everyone’s mantra be reuse, not discard? Keeping in that spirit, ClothingSwaps.com lets you squeeze the life out of old clothes by participating in a clothing swap. You’ll keep unwanted clothing out of landfills and reduce your impact (no matter how seemingly minor) by reusing instead of throwing away or even buying new. The best part? All unwanted clothing from a swap is donated to local charities that benefit women and children in need.

OrganicStoreLocator.com

While I’ve espoused my love for LocalHarvest.org many times before, another site definitely worth a mention is OrganicStoreLocator.com. The site supplies the address of actual brick-and-mortar organic food stores (think Whole Foods) in your own state, giving you access to organic foods year-round. I routinely use it when traveling when I’m looking for an organic food store out-of-state.

DailyFuelEconomyTip.com

While I’d love to run out and purchase the latest hybrid model, I – probably like many of you out there – am not in the position to do so. That’s why I read the Daily Fuel Economy Tip blog, designed solely to provide tips that help you save on fuel and subsequently money, even if you drive a so-called gas guzzler. Finding effective ways to navigate today’s skyrocketing fuel costs while reducing our carbon footprint is one of the easiest and most effectual ways to live green; this blog helps you do just that.

Ecorazzi.com

I’m totally ashamed to admit it but I’m somewhat of a celebrity junkie. I feed my habit by reading Ecorazzi, a celebrity gossip site that caters to the green set and the guilty pleasure of my favorite green sites. The site describes itself as “the latest in green gossip” and you can learn all about the ecological heroes and green villains of Hollywood, without the paper waste of a tangible magazine.
