Another Way Basics Furniture Favorite!

by Kristen Banker on February 3, 2010 in Eco Furniture

It’s not often that I come across a product that impresses me as much in person as it does in theory. It should be obvious at this point, (given that I write about them often) that I am a lover of Way Basics furniture. If you need simple, basic furniture that’s practical and versatile, Way Basics is for you. Their zBoards are easy to put together, sustainably made and completely recyclable.

Way Basics Table Brown

This simple table seats four for an instant gathering, craft time, game play, poker night or play set. Table sets up in seconds, just slide the base boards together and put on the tabletop. Each piece is sturdy yet lightweight enough for kids and adults to move to where they want it. Created with four cubes, and one square table from their basic series. You can also customize your modular table by choosing from a variety of colors.

The eco-friendly pieces feature recycled-paperboard construction that provides unmatched durability, weighing less than half the weight of traditional particleboard, pressed wood, or plywood furniture–without sacrificing any of the strength.

Check out our review of one of their cubes HERE.

Harveys Seatbelt Bag Large Satchel at Zappos.com

Hello Kristen.

This is where you need to place Review Image 1 for display on the homepage under the “Check Out Our Reviews” section. You can insert any size/shape image, but keep in mind it will be resized to a 60×60 pixels square. This means if the image is not square then it will unfortunately appear distorted.

Whenever you add a new Review #1 then you will need to replace this image with the one you would like to show up on the homepage. For Review #2 you will need to go to the post called “ReviewImage2″.

Green furniture is no longer the drab and boring style, fit only for the eco-freaks. Now days, furniture manufacturers are undertaking lots of research and creating furniture with new types of recyclable materials. People are also increasingly feeling the need to protect the environment. Thus, the market for this eco-friendly furniture is creatively growing.

I was recently introduced to an innovative furniture company that not only offers very cool pieces of furniture, from desks, storage units, tables and collapsible cubes, but also has a huge emphasis on recycled green design.

Endless Possibilities

Endless Possibilities

Way Basics uses an environmentally sound manufacturing process that turns post-consumer recycled paper into strong boards, (known by the company as “zboards”). Those boards are then used to transform basic furniture into practical and versatile pieces that are truly awesome, 100% eco-friendly and completely recyclable at the end of their life, so they have little to no environmental impact.

I was able to get my hands on a rectangular cube, which I was really excited to assemble once it arrived. You won’t find complicated diagrams or instructions since there aren’t any screws or nails needed to put your unique zBoards together. That’s because super-strong brand adhesive strips let you fit the pieces neatly together. I was suspicious of the super adhesive fearing it wouldn’t be tough enough, but it is. You can build bookshelves and even beds all fully capable of holding the weight that their functions require. Peel, stick, done, no waste, no rules, no tools! Does is get any cooler then that?

Deco Desk

Deco Desk

I can tell you now; I’m a big fan of these guys. The zboards are super light, water-resistant and really easy to clean. They also come in different colors so you have options to fit your décor and since Way Basics products are modular, it’s easy to create a unique look for any room in your home. And for the uber eco-conscious design lovers out there, the Kraft series exposes the inside of the zBoardsr for an ultra eco-modern design. Plus the price tags of these eco-friendly designs are extremely reasonable, (perfect for these economic times). You can put together a whole room and not break the bank.

Way Basics is more then a furniture company, so when you head over to make your design visions a reality, check out their green causes. And here is another added bonus, (maybe even the best part), Way Basics will offer Modern Eco Home readers a 15% discount on all products purchased by using the following discount code: WBBDMEH15. Make sure you stop by. I’m ready to purchase a desk or a bookcase!

  • Less than half the weight of particleboard, pressed wood, or plywood furniture
  • Sustainably made from 99% post consumer material
  • Water-resistant, easy to clean

Legaré Sustainable Sofa and Coffee Table Review

by Kristen Banker on February 10, 2009 in Eco Furniture

Bamboo is a natural and stylish alternative to traditional furniture materials. It’s the most environmentally sound plant in the world and is used for the production of tons of diverse products available today. The decision to purchase bamboo products is an ecologically responsible choice and one that you can truly feel good about.

The Legaré Sustainable Sofa and Coffee Tables are made from Moso bamboo, the most valuable and sustainable species of bamboo in the world. They use FSC Certified mills, (meaning that only legally harvested bamboo is used in production). Amazingly, this bamboo can regenerate to over 100 feet in height in less than 6 months, yet it’s one of the strongest building materials known, having been used for construction for over 5000 years.

Legaré Sustainable Sofa and Coffee Tables

Legaré Sustainable Sofa and Coffee Tables

There are so many things I love about Legaré products. It’s a line of green furniture that allows for flexibility and is as beautiful as it is practical. The bamboo gives each piece a clean luster with its handsome grain. An eco-friendly “carbonized” finish produced by a non-toxic kiln process gives the furniture its golden amber color. In fact, the kiln process uses the waste material from the making of the plywood for its heat source. These will work perfect in any style home and you can mix and match pieces!

Legarè creates easy to ship pieces, which is great from a carbon footprints perspective and I love the no tools needed assembly. With Legarè furniture you can limit your impact on the earth and still have functioning cool furniture.

The Legaré 36″ x 22″ Coffee Table offers a modern two-level design with storage for magazines and other accoutrements below. Like the sofa table, it assembles with ease. Amazon has a great price for this coffee table at $249.99. You can head on over here to purchase.

The Legaré Sustainable 48″ x 15″ Sofa Table is the perfect size to fit behind a sofa or along an entrance. Like its sister coffee table, it also has two levels which allow for other eco-friendly items underneath. The sofa table has a price tag of $264.99 at Amazon. You can head over here to purchase.

Legaré Coffee and Sofa Table Review Summary:

  • Bi-level storage

  • Reversible surfaces allow you to hide nicks and scratches by flipping the surfaces

  • Easy, no tools assembly

  • Flat pack shipping

  • Disassembles in seconds for flat storage or transport

Cons:

  • I honestly don’t have any for these pieces, but if I ever do, I’ll let you know.

Legaré Desk And Bookcase Review

by Kristen Banker on January 6, 2009 in Eco Furniture

As someone who loves simple, clean, eco-modern design, I am always on the look out for innovative and straightforward solutions for the home. And because I am planning a move in the next few months, I have begun my search for the perfect “home office” set up.

I believe I have found a great eco-alternative to the mass-produced, difficult to assemble standard for any home, small office and in house workspace.

Legaré Office Furniture

Legare 60 Straight Desk

Legare 60" Straight Desk

Legaré Furniture has created evolutionary furniture, which is reversible, modular, requires no tools to assemble, and uses FSC-certified Baltic Birch hardwoods. Their collection can be assembled and re-assembled without using hardware, tools or adhesives; in its broken-down state, it occupies minimal space for ease of moving and shipping. Legaré has taken care to design efficiently and utilize 99% of the raw materials, there is virtually no waste in the production of Legare’s desks, book cases or media systems.

Not bad, right? The design comes flat packed, and the instructions really do make for easy assembly. Plus, it’s a pretty intuitive design. In just three minutes or less, (without tools, screws, or bolts) individual components lock together. They’re designed to avoid any wobbling or hanging that you might imagine from apiece put together in such a way. In addition, because each desk piece is the same on the top and bottom, you are free to orientate the desk as you wish, with the curves or optional peninsula piece on either side.

Legaré 60” Straight Desk

Legare Bookcase

Legare Bookcase

Featuring recessed shelving under the work surface, which offers tons of leg room and more freedom of movement than many other desks. The Legaré also features a versatile, asymmetric design, which allows for left, or right hand configuration. The Straight desk is also available in three different sizes – 36″, 48″ and 60″.

With a price tag of $299.00 at CSN Office, that’s a steal considering it will last a long, long time. Plus, CSN Office offers FREE shipping. Purchase product HERE.

Legaré Straight Desk Summary Review:

Pros:

  • Attractive design
  • Eco-friendly
  • Easy setup
  • Quality construction
  • Easy to move
  • Plywood furniture has greater potential to outlast solid wood furniture

Cons:

  • Although I’m a fan of the espresso color, I would love to see a darker almost black brown

Lagare’s 59″ x 31″ Bookcase

This wooden bookcase comes with four 24-inch-wide shelves and eight position options, spaced 6-3/8 inches apart, for easy customizing or adding extra shelves. Four cutouts in back provide concealed cable management. The bookcase requires only two minutes to assemble and a few seconds to disassemble. Eco Made Mondays

by Kristen Banker on November 3, 2008 in Eco Friendly, Eco Furniture, Green Building, Recycling

Many of the items we buy and use can be recycled. Craft projects from recycled goods are one great way of ensuring that our limited natural resources are optimally used.

From the fabric of old garments to well-trash salvaged materials, can be used to create styles that make mouths drop. As environmental awareness grows and shoppers yearn for individual looks on a budget, people everywhere are getting in on the recycled trend.

Here is a great way to recycle old cans and transform them into a super stylin’, super hip, wine rack for your favorite organic wines.

Thanks Michelle for another innovative recycled DIY idea! Click here to start this project.

Vintage Elm Door Table Review

by Kristen Banker on October 7, 2008 in Eco Furniture

Vintage Elm Table

Vintage Elm Door Table

My ideal dining table is dynamic enough to satisfy a functional feasting ground, but can also provide an intimate setting for social gatherings among friends and family. I mean, does it get any better then food, family and friends? Of course you could add a few bottles of good organic wine!

A dinning table can be very sexy and I happen to think this Vintage Elm Door is one sexy piece. The smooth surface of this memorable elm table allows markings, knots, and a color variation to come alive within its aged wood.

There’s an obvious history in this door since it originated from a very different function before it became this beautiful table. The door clearly called to the craftsperson “I want to be a beautiful table in my next life”! The design elements and character are one-of-a-kind.

The dining room is where family and friends gather and where good food is had (hopefully). This Vintage Elm Door Table seems to know just how to help you create those amazing moments.

Eco Made Mondays

by Kristen Banker on October 6, 2008 in Eco Furniture

Welcome to our first of many Eco Made Mondays!

Here we will offer you ways in which you can reuse, recycle, or reclaim items that you haven’t used in years, pieces that are collecting dust in the attic, or items you can cheaply buy at second hand stores.

Not only will you have fun, (especially if you’re a DIYer), transforming these objects into functional, awesome new pieces of art for your home, but you’ll be amazed at some of the ideas people have come up with for what others probably would consider junk destined for the landfill!

We know Mondays have a tendency to be uninteresting for some. So we’ve decided to spice it up by giving you a cool project to get excited about. What a great way to start your Monday! You’ll have all week to prepare for your DIY and come the following Monday, you’ll be anticipating the next one.

We decided to kick it off this week with a fairly simple project, but super cool nonetheless.

A Lazy Susan made out of an old bicycle wheel. There isn’t a kitchen around that wouldn’t benefit from its presence!

For full detail on “how to”, click here.

Have fun and make sure to leave us comments on how it goes!

Being an environmentally savvy person is dependent upon you and when you are designing your home you should never have to compromise style. Today when it comes to eco-friendly furniture choices, there are many, many, options.

Give your living room unrivaled character and comfortable seating with this beautifully crafted Tre Lounger and Ottoman Set. Its clean form is accomplished by bending and molding pieces of bamboo through a heat process. The final result is a strong, durable, easy on the eyes chair, slightly impressionistic of Charles and Ray Eames’ bent plywood designs from the 40’s. Both the chair and ottoman have been handcrafted using bamboo, while adhering to “sustainable” principles. The speedy growth of bamboo is the perfect “green” material for home furnishings, plus all stains and glues used on these two pieces are certified non-toxic.

This Breeze Sofa Table has also been handcrafted using bamboo. This simple modern console table is not only a great looking piece of eco-friendly furniture, but also has fashion as well as function. Two shelves make this an adaptable table. Use it as a console table, or as a bookshelf! All stains are water based and the glues used are also non-toxic!

Eco-friendly furniture is getting cooler and cooler as the demand and attention to green living becomes more mainstream. Very exciting!
